The man Sudhir Mishra is not known to make the typical commercial films who directed the movies like Dharavi, Hazaron Khwahishein Aisi and Yeh Saali Zindagi comes yet another interesting drama titled Daas Dev. Devdas novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay has captured the imagination of filmmakers in the past and continues to do so even today. This movie is not just borrowed from the Devdas novel but also from William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, to tell a story that essentially tries to capture the dynamics of dynastic politics in India.

Set in UP, ‘Daas Dev’ tells the story of Dev (Rahul Bhat),  a young man who is inebriated at all times, who is a political heir to the throne, his childhood friend and beloved Paro (Richa Chadda) who goes on to challenge him in his own political backyard and Chandni (Aditi Rao Hydari), ‘the other’ woman is a fixer who does the dirty job for politicians and is inexplicably drawn to Dev. When Dev enters into the political arena he soon realizes he has stirred up a hornet’s nest which is filled with accusations of infidelity, betrayal and much worse.

Rahul Bhat as the drunk Romeo does a great job. The two leading ladies Richa Chadha and Aditi Rao Hydari, are consistent with their performances. Director Anurag Kashyap makes a special appearance. Daas Dev has its high points but in totality, the film doesn’t grip you. This contemporary take on Devdas will leave you wanting for more. If you are a fan of political family drama catch it over this long weekend.
