Just like Raja Harishchandra (1913) and Pushpak (1987), Mercury too is a silent film. However, what sets Mercury apart from these two films is that it is a horror-thriller. This Karthik Subbaraj directorial is definitely a unique experience that no one should miss. “Mercury” is being marketed as a “silent film,” but actually, it’s not silent at all. The soundtrack is thick with realistic noise, and Santhosh Narayanan’s musical score is richly atmospheric; this is simply a sound film in which no one talks.

Five friends,  4 guys and a girl are seen celebrating the girl’s birthday at a bungalow. During this night-long celebration, the group makes a mistake that changes their lives forever. However there is something about this group that the trailer does not reveal and the moment you realize it, that’s when all the doubts you had about this horror film being made with no dialogues make sense to you. The rest of the film is how the friends are being hunted down by the character Prabhu Deva plays.

Speaking of the cast performance, Prabhu Deva gives it his all and makes the character one of the most frightening ones in recent years. Though the film has a social message, the plot, treated like a horror film is one dimensional. Fans of horror movies should definitely go watch it. Those of you who are on a lookout for something different and unique in this genre, do not hesitate. Mercury will not disappoint.
