Rampage is full of exaggerated action featuring giant monsters and the legendary Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The movie is loosely (very loosely) based on the cult ‘80s video game of the same name which gave players a unique experience. When other games focused on fighting invaders and saving cities, Rampage let players embrace the chaos and play Godzilla. In that sense, this live-action film definitely sticks to that brand of entertainment.
Davis Okoye is a primatologist played by Dwayne Johnson, who shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla. George has been in Davis’ care since he was rescued as a young orphan from poachers. But after being exposed to a genetic experiment which has gone wrong, this George goes rogue as he begins to mutate into an enormous and volatile creature. As other creatures affected by this mutation also begin to appear, it is up to Davis to come up with a humane solution. He teams with a discredited genetic engineer (Naomie Harris) to secure an antidote while engaging in the battle of a lifetime to prevent a colossal catastrophe.
Director Brad Peyton manages to effectively capture the Transformers aesthetic of buildings and cities being destroyed even as sundry army and air-force units let off futile barrages of munitions and rockets, and The Rock wrestles monsters and credulity. Rampage definitely delivers and gives you enough action to cheer for. So if you love The Rock and you’re a fan of unadulterated action, book your tickets for Rampage now!
