While fresh foods have the maximum amount of nutritional value, frozen foods do not lose their nutritional value when they are subjected to freezing. Calorie Count

As the only fluid that is lost is water, most of the frozen foods retain their calorie count and are as good as fresh foods. The best way to have a check at this factor is to weigh the food before and after it is frozen. The closed container which holds the food should weigh same as before. The food thaws if more fluid is lost but it doesn’t have to do anything with calories. However, it affects the portion size and also the serving size.

Choosing Healthy Frozen Foods

Only foods that are not high in calories and do not contain much of the added sugars or sodium should be preferred for freezing. Choose plain vegetables and fresh fruits as they do not contain any added sugars and syrup. If at all you want to freeze the sauces, make sure that they are made of less fat and sodium. Pizzas, chicken dinners and breakfast sandwiches should not be frozen.

Most of the fresh fruits and veggies are picked before they are even fully ripe taking into account the time needed for transportation and storage. This time can range between three days to even some months for some produce. On the other hand, fruits and vegetables that are frozen are picked when they are fully ripe. This means that they are fully nutritious when they were frozen. Also, no chemicals are added before freezing them. As they are washed, blanched, frozen and packed when ripe, they tend to be more nutritious than some fresh produce.

Freshly picked fruits and veggies are of the highest quality. But frozen food is also, most of the times, equal to fresh produce in terms of nutrition and sometimes they may be even more nutritional. So, at the end of the day, it is wise to choose a mix of frozen and fresh foods to get the best nutritional value.
