Nest Starts Shipping Its Video Doorbell

Connected home devices maker Nest said last September that it is going to debut a video doorbell. However, details about when and where it will be launched were not revealed by the company.

At that time, all Nest said was that the new product will be launched anytime in the first quarter of 2018. Well, it turns out that the time is now!

The company’s new video doorbell, dubbed as Nest Hello is all set to be shipped for $229.

The smart doorbell allows the owners to peek when someone rings at the doorbell without the need to move from your place. As it is equipped with a built in camera, speaker and a microphone, the users will also be able to see and communicate with whoever is at the door.

The device will store information for 3 hours about who rang the doorbell. If you want it to be more than that, then you have to go for a monthly subscription.

If you are thinking it’s surely something out of the box, it helps in also knowing that there aren’t any subscribers yet to this smart device.

Specifications include a 3 mega pixel camera that is equipped with infrared night vision feature and it can also record 1600×1200 videos at a speed of 30 frames per second. It allows the users to have a 160° field view, and comes with 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

But the major drawback of the device is that it doesn’t run on batteries when most of its competitors do. For the Nest Hello to work, you need to fix it to the same wiring set up that you may have probably used for your doorbell. It can also easily sync with most of the window chimes so that doesn’t seem like a problem at all until you are okay with that.

It also comes with a quite-time mode just in case you or your baby want to have a quick nap and don’t want to be disturbed. However, it will still buzz your phone to let you know who’s at the door – albeit calmingly.

You can also pre-record your messages in Hello to communicate with delivery people even when you are not at home and ask them to ‘leave the package’.
